The terrain is rugged and rocky, blanketed by dense hardwood forest encircling two lakes. Clear streams cut into valleys, incising sheer cliffs and ledges and emerging in waterfalls. Hiking, biking, horseback riding and cross-country skiing are very popular activities. Visitors also enjoy swimming, picnicking, boating and marveling at the scenery. New Paltz, The largest member and visitor supported nature preserve in New York State, The Mohonk Preserve offers visitors access to 6,400 acres -- including cliffs, forests, fields, ponds and streams -- and to over 25 miles of carriage roads for horseback riding. Horse trailer parking is available at the Spring Farm Trailhead. Horse carriage users should call ahead to the neighboring resort hotel, Mohonk Mountain House [(845) 255-1000] to secure their approval for travel beyond the Preserve onto Mountain House lands. Excellent parking. The Rockefeller State Park Preserve is characterized by a variety of habitats, including wetlands, woodlands, meadows, fields and a lake. Carriage paths traverse the park, leading into shady river lanes, intimate wooded paths and panoramic vistas. The preserve is ideal for strolling, jogging, cross-country skiing and horseback riding. Nature enthusiasts enjoy birdwatching, photography and sketching. Anglers will find the lake an excellent fishing spot. The Visitor Center hosts exhibits of local and historical interest. Right then go to Otterkill Rd. on left. Again limited parking park on side of road. Stewart State Park located in Newburgh Rt 87 (NYS thruway) take left lane at toll booth onto Route 17K. Right at end of ramp onto 17K West, Go 5 miles. After Dempsey Pipe Co. on left make next left onto Ridge Rd. Travel Ridge Road 1 mile to parking spot.// Rt. 84 Exit 5 onto Route 208 North. Go 1.1 miles to Route 17K heading east, after 2.5 miles turn right on Ridge Road. // from Route 211 in Montgomery--Go East on 17K. 4.4 miles. Turn right onto Ridge Road, just before Dempsey Pipe Co.// 5,500 acres of woods fields, orchards, ponds. Tuthill Rd Trails, Rt. 94 Bloomingrove. Park at FieldStone Shopping plaza walk down Tuthill Rd. Tail on left side up about 1/4 mile. Wallkill Valley Rail Trail, Starts in Kingston Town to Montgomery, NY. Take Albany Post Road Majestic Park in Gardiner there is a street sign on 44/55 (Main Street). There is a gravel parking area next to the fenced park. Go through the fields to the edge of field get on the trail there. Ward Pound Ridge, Cross River, NY, 914-763-3493 84 east to 684 south to exit 6 Rt. 35, 4 miles to Route 121 turn right, 100 yards on left. 4700 acres, 35 miles of trails. Winding Hills Park, Rt. 17K West of the town of Montgomery some Steep hills a little rocky. But something different. |
